Ingredients:

  • 500 grams all-purpose flour
  • 10 grams salt
  • 10 grams sugar
  • 200 milliliters warm milk
  • 1 packet (7 grams) active dry yeast
  • 1 egg (optional)
  • Vegetable oil for frying

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the dough:

    • In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast in warm milk and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
    • In a large bowl, mix the flour, salt, and sugar.
    • Add the yeast mixture to the dry ingredients and mix well. If using, add the egg and mix until a dough forms.
    • Knead the dough for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
    • Cover the bowl with a clean kitchen towel and let the dough rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until it doubles in size.
  2. Shape and fry the dough:

    • Once the dough has risen, punch it down to release the air.
    • Heat the vegetable oil in a deep frying pan over medium heat.
    • Take small portions of the dough and shape them into balls or flatten them slightly.
    • Carefully drop the dough pieces into the hot oil and fry until golden brown on both sides, about 2-3 minutes per side.
    • Remove the petulla from the oil and drain on paper towels.
  3. Serve:

    • Serve the petulla warm, dusted with powdered sugar, drizzled with honey, or with your favorite jam. For a savory option, enjoy them with cheese or yogurt.
